MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman was shot in the neck while driving on Interstate 240 and Poplar Avenue Tuesday evening, according to Memphis Police.

Around 5:35 p.m., officers say they responded to an aggravated assault involving firearms being discharged at I-240 and Poplar. An off-duty lieutenant stated that her friend was shot in the neck and had driven herself to St. Francis Park Hospital for treatment.

When officers arrived at the hospital, the victim stated that she was driving southbound on I-240 West in the third lane when a dark gray Dodge Charger sped past her in the second lane.

She says that is when shots were fired from the Charger toward another vehicle in the fourth lane.

The backseat passenger allegedly aimed an assault rifle in the victim’s direction in an attempt to hit the other vehicle. The passenger fired three shots and one of the bullets went through the victim’s front windshield on the driver’s side.

The victim says when she realized she was shot in the neck, she got off on the Poplar Avenue exit and drove to the St. Francis Park emergency room.

She was then taken to Regional One Hospital in non-critical condition.

Around 7 p.m. MPD closed the interstate to investigate the shooting. Shell casings were found along I-240 West.

According to Memphis Police, there have been 74 interstate shootings so far this year compared to last year’s 81 shootings.
