MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is dead after he was struck by his own car when another vehicle crashed into it early Monday morning on Interstate 40 near Appling Road.

According to Memphis Police, a driver was traveling on I-40 when it hit the back of an unoccupied vehicle just before 1:30 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle that was hit got out to check his car for damages from a previous crash. Another vehicle then hit his vehicle, pushing it into him, police said.

The driver did not survive his injuries, police say. This is still an ongoing investigation.

Detectives haven’t said if the other driver is facing any charges or fines.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, distracted driving is a leading cause of accidents responsible for killing thousands every year, with hundreds of thousands left injured.
