MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Three men were arrested after police say they broke into a Parkway Village City Gear and stole over $20,000 worth of Nike and Jordan sneakers.
Despite the new shoes, they couldn’t outrun police.
Devontay Bonds, 27; Willie Powell, 23; and Haywood Jordan, 22 were taken into custody and charged with the crime. Memphis Police say more arrests are expected.
Police say on September 18, just before 5 a.m., officers responded to an alarm call at the City Gear located at 4641 American Way. When officers arrived, they saw several people loading boxes of shoes into a silver Kia Sorento and a black Ford Fusion.
The suspects jumped into the cars and fled the scene when they noticed the officers.
Reports say Willie Powell ran from police on foot, trying to jump into one of the fleeing cars. The car drove off before Powell was completely inside, causing him to fall out.
He was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for treatment.
It was determined that the suspects broke into the business through the roof and stole over $20,000 worth of sneakers, according to a store manager.
MPD says that while trying to make an arrest at a house in Frayser on October 1, Haywood Jordan and Devontay Bonds pulled up to the scene in a black Ford Fusion and asked officers why the man was being arrested.
Police previously received a Crime Stoppers tip stating that Jordan had been involved in the City Gear burglary, and they identified Jordan as a person of interest. He was then taken into custody at the Frayser home.
During questioning, Jordan allegedly told police that the black Ford Fusion was used in the burglary and that it was driven by Bonds at the time.
Devontay Bonds was taken into custody on Thursday.
Bonds is charged with Burglary and Theft of Property $10,000-$60,000. His bond has not been set, but he is scheduled to appear in court on Monday morning.
Powell is charged with Burglary of Building, Theft of Property $10,000-$60,000, and Evading Arrest to wit: Foot Pursuit. He is being held on a $30,000 bond.
Jordan is charged with Burglary and Theft of Property $10,000-$60,000. His bond is set at $20,000.
