MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A breast cancer walk ended in tragedy after a woman was shot and killed at Shelby Farms Park on Saturday afternoon.

“She was running,” eyewitness Monica Bell said. “He caught her right there and pop, pop.”

Chaos erupted after Shelby County Deputies said that a shooting occurred approximately at 12:15 in the parking lot of the Visitor Center at Shelby Farms.

The victim, identified by SCSO as 22-year-old Ellie Young, died on the scene and the suspect got away but was later detained in Dyer County after a high-speed multi-county chase .

“The ambulance, everybody got here real fast,” Bell said.

Monica Bell told WREG that she witnessed the entire thing.

She said the shooting happened immediately after a breast cancer walk at the park.

According to Bell, the victim was leaving the walk when someone trailing close behind her opened fire.

“I was walking towards my car and the young lady was getting in her Jeep and a man came by in a white car and shot her twice,” Bell said. “Came out of the blue and started shooting and shot her. It could’ve been anybody walking and got shot because he didn’t care.”

Deputies have not released a motive for the shooting.

“You can’t even have peace. You can’t even walk,” Bell said. “It’s really ridiculous. You need to cut this violence out.”

SCSO says that this is still an ongoing investigation.

We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at the Park in the Visitor Center parking lot today. There is no threat to visitor or public safety. This is an active investigation and we are referring all questions to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
