Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez has pleaded no contest to the charges of attempted murder, in addition to felony assault and gun charges.

On February 28, 2022, Cain Velasquez allegedly shot at a vehicle that contained Harry Goularte, who had been accused of molesting his son. Velasquez allegedly rammed the vehicle and fired at it. Goularte’s stepfather, Paul Bender, was in the vehicle, and he was said to be injured in the shooting. He was then booked and later charged with attempted murder . In August 2022, Velasquez pleaded not guilty . He was later granted bail.

Robert Salonga of the East Bay Times reports that Cain Velasquez pleaded no contest to the charges in a San Jose courtroom in front of Judge Arthur Bocanegra on August 16. The case had been set to go to trial on September 9. However, the plea deal may potentially come with sentencing leniency. By going to trial, Velasquez risked being sentenced to life in prison, had he been convicted.

With the plea deal, Cain Velasquez will not face a life sentence, but he will still be convicted. His scheduling hearing is scheduled for October 18. Salonga notes that the county probation department will produce a recommendation for the sentencing, given the various factors involved.

Per Salonga, Velasquez and his attorney declined to comment. Velasquez is still out of custody but is required to follow the terms of his release.

Salonga also quoted a statement from District Attorney Jeff Rosen:

“This defendant decided to become judge, jury, and executioner. His actions endangered innocent bystanders, including young children and their parents who could have been injured or killed as he shot at his intended victim,” Rosen said.
