Gunther Reacts To King of the Ring Botch During Match With Randy Orton

Gunther is good with the botched ending to his King of the Ring victory over Randy Orton .

Earlier in the summer, Gunther became the King of the Ring for the first time in his career. The Austrian beat Randy Orton in the final, not long after ending his record-setting reign with the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania that year.

Gunther defeated Sheamus, Kofi Kingston and Jey Uso en route to a final match at King and Queen of the Ring, setting up a match with the 14-time world champion.

He pinned The Viper in Saudi Arabia, but the ending was controversial. The referee counted the pin fall, but Orton’s shoulders weren’t down on the mat. Luckily, Gunther doesn’t see it as too much of an issue.

Gunther spoke with Metro about the match. He said that mistakes happen in every sport, and that it actually helped build to the rematch at Bash in Berlin.

Gunther explains why he was actually “very good with it”

He went on to say that he has “the utmost respect” for Orton, and that getting to face him was a “special night” for the World Heavyweight Champion.

“I was very good with it, because referee’s mistakes happens.” Gunther told Metro. “It happens in every sport. It’s part of it. It fuels the involvement in what we do, because it’s frustrating for the competitors. It’s frustrating for the fans, because they think they were about to see something else, or something else should have been the end of this match.”

“I think without, without that happening, the match [at Bash In Berlin] wouldn’t have happened and would not have meant that much. I have the utmost respect for Randy. To be in the ring with him on an eye level, and, yeah, put a great professional wrestling match on in that setting, it was a special night.”
