RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Passionate about Virginia’s abundant natural resources? The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is taking applications for its next Conservation Police Training Academy.

The Virginia DWR will hold its 14th Conservation Police Training Academy in March 2025, according to a press release. Conservation Police officer hopefuls have until mid-September to apply for a chance to become a part of the team.

“On any given day, DWR conservation police officers are outdoors protecting Virginians, including hunters, anglers, boaters, wildlife watchers and any visitor recreating in the Commonwealth,” the Virginia DWR said in the release. “No day is the same, but every day is eventful. If you have a passion for wildlife, fisheries and supporting Virginia outdoorsmen and women, consider becoming a conservation police officer.”

According to the release, starting pay for conservation police officers is $52,530, with a 10% pay increase following the probationary period. Current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services Certified Law Enforcement Officers are eligible for a $2,000 bonus.

“After completing the academy, the newly sworn officers will receive a series of pay adjustments based on tenure through the Career Progression Program,” the Virginia DWR said in its Frequently Asked Questions about these positions.

Careers are available throughout the state. According to the Virginia DWR, a potential conservation police officer will be informed of their duty station in their final offer letter. Schedules vary depending on seasonal patrol needs, but the Virginia DWR notes there is flexibility and officers can work with their district supervisor to find the best fit.

Those who are accepted and attend the March 2025 academy — which will be hosted at the Virginia DWR headquarters in Henrico County — should expect to graduate in October of 2025.
