POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Nature fanatics can spend their Friday evening at Powhatan State Park learning about the science of lightning bugs and how to protect them.

Did you know that fireflies are actually beetles? You’ll learn about this and more at the event, which will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, May 17 at the overflow parking area near the River Bend campground.

Attendees will hear from Virginia Master Naturalists and Xerces Society insect experts, participate in a group firefly activity and get a free finger lights and mini firefly poster.

Guests can bring a camp chair or blanket for comfortable seating, as well as a red-setting headlamp or flashlight, and bug spray if they’d like.

The event is free to attend, although guests must pay the standard admission fee to enter the park.
