RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU hosted the inaugural Mental Health and Wellness Community Day at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School on Saturday.
On Saturday, July 20, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. community members gathered at the middle school to learn about the different mental health resources available to them. They also had the opportunity to enjoy live music, food trucks, face painting and wellness activities.
Nicole Cook and Brittany Fisher of Children’s Mental Health Resource Center (CMHRC) talked with 8News about why an event like this is necessary for the community.
“It’s a great way to get resources and support, and it’s a great way for you just to learn what is available,” Cook said. “I think the biggest thing is a lot of people don’t know what is available to them, and so we’re bringing all of them here at one time.”
Cook and Fisher emphasized the impact that events like this can have on children in need.
“We were able to register 102 people this year for free book bags and supplies,” Fisher said.
