LOUISA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — 8News is your Back to School headquarters for the 2024-25 school year. Here’s what students and families kicking off a new academic year at Louisa County Public Schools need to know.

The first day of school for students will be Thursday, Aug. 8.

Things to know and what to bring to school

To view school supply lists for each elementary school, visit the school division’s website . Middle school and high school teachers will provide students with a list of recommended school supplies during Open House, which will be held on Monday, Aug. 5.

At the start of the school year, secondary students are asked to bring basic school supplies with them, like loose-leaf paper that’s college-ruled, spiral notebooks and pencils.

The division also recommends taking the following guidance when buying school supplies:

    • All three-ring binders should be 1.5 inches or less.
    • When possible, please use plastic water bottles. If you do purchase metal water bottles, please opt for small/medium-sized bottles.
    • Please avoid purchasing wheeled, rolling backpacks if possible.
    • Please do not purchase adult-sized scissors. Instead, opt for blunt, small/medium-sized scissors.

All students in the division are able to receive free breakfast and lunch each day for the 2024-2025 school year without the need for an application.

Safety efforts at Louisa County Public Schools are led by its Safe Schools Task Force, a committee made up of more than 50 members, including staff members, parents, law enforcement officers, emergency services personnel, school counselors, mental health counselors, administrators, Louisa County School Board members and Louisa County Board of Supervisors members, according to a spokesperson for the division.

The committee meets at least five times a year to focus on safety in schools throughout the county.

Policies, changes for students and families to know about

According to a spokesperson for the school division, the policy for cell phones has required them to be turned off and put away during the school day since 2008. Under this policy, cell phones are not to be seen or heard at any time during the school day.

If students need to use a phone during the day, one is available in the school office.

Events at the start of the school year

The following events will take place at the beginning of the school year:

    • Monday, Aug. 5: Secondary Open Houses
    • Tuesday, Aug. 6: Elementary Open Houses
    • Friday, Sept. 13: Green and Gold Spirit Day
    • Tuesday, Sept. 17: Constitution Day
    • Wednesday, Oct. 9: #Kindness Day
