CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — At least 10 homes in Caroline County were damaged Thursday evening by a tornado with winds reaching an estimated 110 mph, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The NWS issued a tornado warning for the Caroline area the evening of Thursday, Aug. 8. Its initial storm reports indicate that a tornado potentially touched down in the Lake Caroline subdivision and moved onto the nearby Cedar Fork Road.

On Friday, the NWS provided more information after its surveyors arrived in the area. The tornado was confirmed and its winds were estimated to have reached between 100 and 110 mph.

Further reporting from the NWS detailed the path of the tornado. Just before 7 p.m., the tornado formed and initially touched down near Cedar Fork Road, about one mile west of Route 1. As it traveled towards the Lake Caroline subdivision, it began uprooting many trees.

It entered the subdivision near the intersection of Senate Drive and Kennedy Cove, continuing to take down trees. Homes along Loyalist, American, West Point, Woodlyn, Powder Horn and Admiral drives were damaged, including their roofs and siding, as trees and power lines fell on them.

More than 30 houses were affected before the tornado dissipated near Lake Caroline Road and Waring Drive.
