RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Those serving time or on probation with the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) will be able to improve their reading skills through a new literacy program.

According to an Aug. 12 press release from VADOC, “Reading Enables All Learners” (REAL) will provide opportunities for those who cannot read and those with beginner’s reading skills to take part in self-paced learning with the guidance of certified inmate tutors.

The REAL program initially launched in June, starting out as small-group lessons in libraries and other non-classroom settings. VADOC said it hopes to have REAL in all of its facilities by the end of this year.

Programs like this one are aimed at helping those in prison or those on probation better reintegrate into society once they have finished serving their sentences.

VADOC describes education as a “major key” for successful reintegration. According to the release, studies have shown that those with a GED are less likely to reoffend.

“We realized a necessary first step for some inmates is to master the basics before they can
successfully engage with a GED program,” said VADOC Director Chad Dotson. “By bringing their
reading skills up to the necessary grade level, we are ensuring these inmates can successfully
transition to a HSE course and build a lasting skill that will open doors for inmates upon reentry.”
