CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Following the retirement of its previous superintendent in April, Chesterfield County Public Schools named its interim superintendent Tuesday night.

During a scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 13, the Chesterfield County School Board announced that John T. Murray would take up the role of interim superintendent as of Sept. 1.

“Our school division is in a time of transition, but our goals and our daily work remains the same,” Murray said in the release. “We are here to ensure our students receive the best possible education and grow into successful adults. With a spirit of collaboration and support, our schools, our students and our staff will continue to thrive.”

According to a press release from the school division, Murray has an extensive career history with Chesterfield County Public Schools.

His most recent position was deputy superintendent — but he’s also served as the executive director of constituent services, the director of middle school leadership, the principal of Matoaca High, the principal of Carver Middle, the assistant principal at Matoaca Middle, the assistant principal at Robious Middle and a seventh-grade history and language arts teacher.

This appointment comes after the previous superintendent, Mervin B. Daughtery, announced his retirement on April 9 after 50 years with the school district. His last day was June 30.
