FBI Richmond offers $10,000 reward to solve 2016 murder

KING AND QUEEN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — FBI Richmond is offering a $10,000 reward for information related to the murder of James Edward “Scooter” Byrd.

The FBI Richmond Field Office and the King and Queen County Sheriff’s Office recently announced a $10,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals who are responsible for the murder of James Edward “Scooter” Byrd, as the 8th anniversary of his death approaches.

According to FBI Richmond, in the early morning hours of Aug. 16, 2016, Byrd was shot and killed after several people entered his house. His little brother, who was 13 years-old at the time, was asleep down the hall and woke up when he heard shots fired. He later ran to a neighbor’s home to call 911.

With advancements in technology, the evidence and digital data have been re-collected and analyzed.

“As we approach the 8th Anniversary of James “Scooter” Byrd’s murder, we continue to look for closure and justice for Scooter’s children, his family, and his community,” said King and Queen County Sheriff W.R. “Rob” Balderson. “Someone knows something that will help Scooter’s case. With this renewed attention and reward, we can ultimately close the case and provide justice to Scooter’s legacy and comfort to his grieving family.”

The FBI Richmond Field Office is assisting the King and Queen County Sheriff’s Office with DNA, firearm and cell phone analysis, as well as with conducting interviews.

“The FBI Richmond Field Office hopes that this reward will bring more attention to this case and motivate people to come forward with crucial information that will allow law enforcement to hold the individual(s) responsible for Scooter Byrd’s death accountable,” Assistant Special Agent in Charge Stephen Farina said.
