GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Goochland County teen took time this summer to tackle trash on Broad Street in the Hadensville area.

13-year-old Sophia Leer and her father, Josh Leer, dedicated a little time on Tuesday, July 30 to make a difference in their community by picking up litter on the road.

“My father had mentioned how trash has been building up on the road leading up to our neighborhood. I figured this summer was a perfect opportunity to knock it off the bucket list,” said Sophia.

They both cleaned a half-mile stretch of Broad Street Road in the Hadensville area.

“I was shocked to have filled seven lawn and leaf bags,” said Sophia, “The majority of the trash was hidden beneath the undergrowth, so it had clearly been there for a while.”

Sophia’s family hopes that her efforts inspire others to get involved with cleaning up the community.

“We are very proud of her for wanting to do something to give back to the community in a way that also benefits the health of our planet,” said Sophia’s father. “Sophia is driven and determined when setting goals for herself. She has made our whole family want to get involved.”

For other Goochland residents interested in organizing their own roadside cleanup initiatives , vests, bags and trash pickers are available at the Goochland Convenience Center.

In addition, the 25th Annual James River Regional Cleanup will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Tucker Park at Maidens Landing. The event is free and open to the public, click here to register.
