Cumberland County Public Schools varsity football season canceled for 2024-25 school year

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The varsity football season at Cumberland County Public Schools has been canceled for the 2024-25 school year.

In an official post on Facebook on Thursday, Aug. 15 , Cumberland County Public Schools announced the decision to cancel the varsity football season for the 2024-25 school year.

According to the school district, the decision was made after “careful consideration of several key factors” including the number of players in the upper grade levels and the safety of the schools’ younger athletes.

“This decision was not made lightly. To ensure the safety and development of our players, we believe it is in the best interest of our program to focus on our JV football team. By doing so, we aim to rebuild and strengthen our varsity team for future seasons,” Cumberland County Public Schools said in its statement.

Additionally, the school district announced that its football games traditionally held on Friday nights will now take place on Wednesday nights as it makes this transition.

“This shift will allow our community to rally around our JV team and continue to showcase our #DukePride,” Cumberland County Public Schools said in its statement.

Cumberland County Public Schools said it understands that the change may be disappointing, but its priority remains in the well-being and growth of its student-athletes.

“We appreciate your understanding and continued support as we navigate this transition,” the school system said in its statement.
