PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Interested in local history? Petersburg National Battlefield’s Earthworks Management Program is accepting applications for volunteers who will maintain several historical areas.

Volunteers will work through the end of the summer into the fall on the battlefield’s World War I trenches, Battery 5, Fort Fisher, Fort Wadsworth and Fort Stedman, according to the National Park Service.

Work would include removing woody vegetation, invasive species and animal intrusions as well as erosion control efforts, which would include clearing brush and reseeding parts of earthworks.

Field work usually takes between two and three hours.
