RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — In 2023, the Matoaca Warriors advanced to the state playoffs and clinched a region championship for the first time since 2005. The team concluded their season with a 10-4 record, setting high expectations for the 2024 season. Under the guidance of third-year head coach Fred Stoots, the Warriors are gearing up for another successful year.

Coach Stoots reflected on the team’s accomplishments and their drive for the upcoming season: “They’ve earned it; these guys, most of them have been four-year varsity starters, so they’ve earned the right and worked their tails off to get to where they were. Last year was a product of their success and their work ethic that made them into regional champions, and this year we hope to take the next step and win some state playoff games and make an impact there. With these guys, because of their track record, history, and accomplishments, I think that’s what their goal is.”

The Warriors are returning some of the best talent in the state this season. The team boasts four players committed to Power Five schools, embodying the adage that “iron sharpens iron.” Senior Bryce Yates emphasized the competitive nature of the team: “It’s great competition; we always try to go best on best. We’ve been pushing each other since we were little. We’re pretty excited, but we are more hungry. We came up short last year, so we’re even hungrier for this year.”

Beyond their talent, Coach Stoots highlights the special bond within the team. “These guys, they mean a lot to me. I love them to death. I’m going to miss them when they’re gone, but I’m hoping we can have one good last ride together. I’m excited to watch those guys play at the next level, and we should have a couple seniors join them at different schools as well.”

The Matoaca Warriors will kick off their quest for a state championship on September 6th, hitting the road to face Warhill.
