RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The United States Postal Service (USPS) Office of the Inspector General has ranked Virginia the fourth-worst region in the U.S. for on-time mail delivery by the agency.

According to the office’s latest Service Performance report, Virginia is now USPS’ fourth-worst region for percentage of parcels delivered on time with 78.1%, behind Georgia with 40.2%, Wisconsin with 70.5% and the joint region of Alabama and Mississippi with 72.8%.

In late June, USPS’ data showed that Virginia was the country’s third-worst region for on-time delivery by USPS with 77%, meaning the Commonwealth has improved in the last few months.

Six of the 10 regions with the highest percentage of on-time deliveries are in California, which is split into seven regions. The other four regions in the top 10 are in Hawai’i, eastern Pennsylvania, Alaska and southeastern Florida.

Mail delivery by USPS in Virginia slowed down significantly during the first half of 2024 after the agency began to consolidate operations and opened a new distribution facility in the Sandston area of Henrico County.

These issues prompted inquiries from elected officials including Sen. Tim Kaine and Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney Collette McEachin, as well as an audit of the facility in Henrico .
