How does statewide crime data compare to Central Virginia localities?

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — After statewide crime data was released by Virginia State Police in a report on Tuesday — how does the data compare to the City of Richmond and the counties that surround it?

Chesterfield County

Chesterfield County saw a significant increase in violent crime from 2022 to 2023, which goes along with the statewide trend. According to data from Virginia State Police, the number of crimes — including both violent and non-violent crime — reported in Chesterfield increased from 19,381 in 2022 to 21,354 in 2023, demonstrating a 10.2% increase. Although there was an increase in violent crime reports overall, murder and nonnegligent manslaughter reports actually saw a 57.9% decrease.

City of Richmond

The trend of violent crime increasing throughout the state can also be seen in data from the City of Richmond. According to data from Virginia State Police, the number of violent crimes reported increased from 16,894 in 2022 to 18,299 in 2023, demonstrating an 8.3% increase. Reports of murder and non-negligent manslaughter also saw a 5.1% increase.

Henrico County

Henrico County saw a decrease in violent crime from 2022 to 2023, going against the statewide trend. According to data from Virginia State Police, the number of violent crimes reported decreased from 18,062 in 2022 to 17,091 in 2023, demonstrating a 5.4% decrease. Reports of murder and non-negligent manslaughter also saw a 21.9% decrease.
