RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Residents of the Richmond area who were welcomed by unexpected cool temperatures when walking outside on Wednesday morning were not alone — the National Weather Service (NWS) says it was the region’s coldest August morning in over two decades .

This morning, the National Weather Service in Wakefield recorded 56 degrees in Richmond, the coldest August temperature in the city since 2000. The temperature of 54 degrees recorded on Wallops Island in Accomack County this morning was also the coldest recorded in the area since 2000.

NWS recorded a temperature of 61 this morning in Norfolk, the coldest August temperature in the city since 2013.

The familiar August heat will slowly return over the next week, with the highs expected to rise from the high 70s to the low 90s between now and next Wednesday .
