RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — When it comes to Highland Springs football, one word comes to mind: success. The Springers had yet another standout season last year, advancing to their second consecutive state championship game. Despite a late comeback, they fell to Freedom 42-34. However, as the 2024 season approaches, Highland Springs is determined to return to their third straight state championship game and secure another title.

“Man everyone knows that the deal is they know what we are working towards, they know what we are working towards they know how we need to prepare they know what we need to be focus at and the kids just do a really good job of just allowing the culture to work itself as opposed to trying to shape it into what they want it to be,” said head coach Loren Johnson.

Despite their impressive track record, Highland Springs is not content with just reaching the final game. They are focused on claiming another state championship in 2024.

“13-2 most people would say that’s a good season and stuff like that but like that’s not the standard here the standard is to win a state championship every year, so this last year we really just trying to finish it off how we did in 2022 year so just trying to get back to that 15-0 how the standard is at Highland Springs,” said safety Brennan Johnson.

Coach Loren Johnson, now in his 17th year at the helm of the Springers, is motivated this season as his youngest son enters his final year as a player. Making this season even more special for the head coach.

“This is my youngest son’s last year he’s been around these kids and I’ve been around these kids since they were 8 years old, so that does a little bit to you emotionally, but when it’s all said and done it’s playing football and working to our optimal level and if we can do that we can be good.”

The Highland Springs Springers will kick off their 2024 season on Thursday, August 29th, with an away game against Manchester.
