COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) — A man from Colonial Heights is in jail after police say he set his apartment on fire.

According to the Colonial Heights Fire Department, units responded to an apartment fire on Friday at 12:30 a.m. Upon investigation, authorities determined that 22-year-old Ka’Wan Yarborough had set his apartment on fire near Newcastle Avenue.

Surrounding neighbors got out safely but authorities said Yarborough, who was the only person inside his home, did not comply when asked to evacuate. Officers with the Colonial Heights Police Department grabbed him from a downstairs window and arrested him shortly after.

8News spoke with a family member, who wished to remain anonymous, who said they hope Yarborough can recover from this tough situation as soon as possible. Police didn’t say what may have caused Yarborough to torch his home.

Yarborough has been charged with arson and is currently at Riverside Regional Jail. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Colonial Heights General District Court on Oct. 9.
