RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) –The Midlothian Trojans are stepping onto the field with renewed optimism under the leadership of second-year head coach Phil Gross. After a solid 5-5 season that saw the Trojans narrowly miss the playoffs, Midlothian have dedicated themselves to overcoming last year’s hurdles, putting in significant extra effort during the offseason.

“We feel good about where we are right now. The guys are really committed; they broke every record we had in the weight room, so we’re pretty happy with where we are at right now,” said head coach Phil Gross. This dedication in the weight room is just one of the many signs of the team’s commitment to improvement.

The hard work has not gone unnoticed. Coach Gross is particularly excited about the progress made by the offensive line. “Our O-line has really put in the work in the offseason, so I’m really excited with where that’s going. If that continues to progress as it has been, I think you’re going to see an offense that’s more potent this year,” he said.

However, this offseason has not been without its challenges. The Trojans suffered the tragic loss of Wyatt Fowler, who passed away in a car crash last December. The impact of Fowler’s loss has deeply affected the team, and his memory continues to inspire them.

“So we’re trying to walk beside his family still, because we loved him and love them still and do what we can for them. But we still are trying to walk beside each other too. I think it’s part of what’s going on this season for us, and the reason why we have such a tight group right now, is that they are embracing that and realizing that life can be short. So we want to try to live in every moment,” said Coach Gross. The Trojans’ unity and close bond have been strengthened by this shared experience, contributing to a more cohesive and resilient team.

Senior Bennett McCandless reflected on the team’s camaraderie, highlighting the fun and friendship that drives their motivation. “All of us are friends. It’s very fun to come out here. Like, sometimes the season gets long, you’re dreading practice. But it’s fun coming out here with my friends every day. It’s something I look forward to. Like, school’s not always fun, so you’ve got to have something that keeps you coming back,” McCandless said.

The Trojans will launch their 2024 season on the road against Monacan on Thursday, August 29th.
