HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 72-year-old man riding a moped is dead following a crash on Mechanicsville Turnpike in Henrico County.

At 12:06 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, officers with the Henrico County Police Division responded to Mechanicsville Turnpike near Springdale Road for the report of a two-vehicle crash involving a sedan and a moped.

According to police, the preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the moped was heading north on Mechanicsville Turnpike when the moped “became displaced.”

Police said a sedan, also heading north, approached from behind and changed lanes to avoid another slow-moving vehicle, which resulted in the sedan hitting the moped.

The driver of the moped, 72-year-old Billy Chestnut of Hanover County, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, according to police.

Police continue to investigate the crash. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Crash Team Investigator L. C. Jones at 804-501-5000.
