WAYNESBORO, Va. (WRIC) — The Wildlife Center of Virginia has begun caring for a juvenile opossum after it was found clinging to its dead mother who was hit by a driver.

According to the center, the rescuer found the opossum holding onto its mother who had died after being hit by a driver.

When being admitted, the center said its veterinary team examined the opossum and found it had two fractures in its left forelimb. The injured leg was then carefully bandaged with a cast to stabilize the fractures, and the opossum was put on pain medication to keep it comfortable.

The center said the opossum is eating well and is active despite the injury. The center’s team will continue to monitor the opossum’s leg and plans to take radiographs at the beginning of September.
