Two Chesterfield homes struck by lightning, catch fire within minutes of each other

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Two homes in Chesterfield County were hit by lightning within the same 10 minutes Monday evening, leaving both damaged by the resulting fires.

The evening of Monday, Aug. 26, firefighters with Chesterfield County Fire & EMS responded to two house fire calls that came in within six minutes of each other.

The first call came in at 6:35 p.m., with units responding to a home in the 14300 block of Charter Landing Drive.

When firefighters arrived, they found the fire in the attic of the home and were able to quickly put it out.

The second call came in just six minutes later at 6:41 p.m., with firefighters being dispatched to the 1700 block of Bellows Drive.

They arrived within 3 minutes and found flames pouring from the roof of one side of the house. According to fire officials, firefighters battled this fire for about thirty minutes before marking it under control.

Fire officials said both fires were caused by lightning strikes.

No one was injured in either incident. However, four Chesterfield residents from the Bellows Drive scene were displaced by the damage to their home. According to fire officials, they are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
