Royal Rumble will race into Henrico this weekend

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A BMX competition featuring riders from across the world will race into Taylor Farm Park on Saturday, Aug. 31.

The free community event benefits Richmond based non-profit RADshare , which provides free helmets to city youth.

“What we try to do is empower young people through action sports and provide free helmets and bikes for under-resourced communities,” said Steve Crandall, program director for RADshare. “Just give kids an opportunity to find out what’s great about BMX riding and skate parks and ramps and dirt jumps.”

The annual event has historically been held in Richmond, but organizers say this year – they wanted to try something new. The new venue at Taylor Farm Park will feature three separate areas for riders to enjoy.

“We wanted to create an event that’s like participation base, you know, fun for everyone,” Crandall said. “This park has amenities for all skill levels and all different types of riders.”

Saturday’s events include kids and women’s riding events and pro competitions. Crandall says kids will even be able to meet and ride with their favorite professionals.

“I think there’s something to said when a young person can someone they look up to in real life and get to interact and engage with them,” Crandall explained. “To find motivation and inspiration from people that are just regular real-life humans that are just having fun on bikes.”

The ‘Kid’s Jam’ will begin at 11 a.m. The day will also feature a women’s jam, and pro events will wrap up by 5 p.m.

Taylor Farm Park is located in Sandston at 200 Whiteside Road.
