CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Chesterfield County Fire and EMS is reminding residents why they should close doors in their home in the event of a fire.

Chesterfield County Fire and EMS shared photos on Facebook from a house fire that began in an upstairs bedroom. Officials said the homeowners had noticed the fire and closed the door to the room, stopping it from spreading any further.

“As you can see, the fire caused significant damage, but outside of the room where it started, the damage is minimal,” Chesterfield County Fire and EMS said in its Facebook post.

In research conducted by the Fire Safety Research Institute , Vice President and Executive Director Steve Kerber said with doors and windows closed, the fire will not receive oxygen to burn, and will stay where it is at.

If a resident notices a fire in their home, Chesterfield County Fire and EMS advises them to close the door to the room where it is burning to stop its spread. Residents are also encouraged to consider closing their bedroom doors when sleeping as an extra precaution.
