NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Multiple lanes were closed on a section of Interstate 64 West in New Kent County due to “police activity.”

At around 11:50 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, the left shoulder, left lane and right lane were reported closed on I-64 West near the Bottoms Bridge exit due to “police activity.”

According to a spokesperson for Virginia State Police, at around 10:46 a.m. on Friday, a trooper attempted to stop a black Infinity for a traffic infraction on I-64 West near the 245 mile marker when the driver refused to pull over. A pursuit was then initiated by troopers until they lost sight of the vehicle.

Officials say troopers and local units in the surrounding jurisdiction were aware of the pursuit and were able to locate the vehicle to attempt to stop the driver again. However, the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed at the 204 mile marker of I-64.

At around noon, the Virginia Department of Transportation reported that there was 5 miles of traffic backups. At around 2 p.m., the department said the scene was clear and all lanes were reopened to traffic.

According to the New Kent County Sheriff’s Office , law enforcement and fire personnel had responded to the scene. Officials said drivers could expect delays and the backup would likely affect county roadways as people attempted to avoid the interstate.

The New Kent County Sheriff’s Office says Virginia State Police will be handling the investigation.
