CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — This Labor Day weekend, Virginia State Police (VSP) is urging drivers to be safe on the roads.

In an effort to address the higher numbers of crashes and deaths that typically take place during the holiday weekend, state troopers will be out in force looking for impaired drivers. Sgt. Jessica Shehan with VSP emphasized the importance of responsible driving during the holiday.

“People are traveling more to get in that last summer vacation,” Shehan said. “We tend to have more speeders.”

Virginia State Police arrested 73 people for drunk driving and 14 people lost their lives on Virginia roads during last year’s Labor Day weekend.

“We’re hoping to reduce that number dramatically this year,” said Shehan.

To enhance safety and decrease the number of highway deaths, Virginia State Police will be participating in Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort (CARE) from Friday, Aug. 30 until midnight on Monday, Sept. 2. This initiative involves increased enforcement efforts by law enforcement agencies across the state.

By exercising caution and avoiding drunk driving, all drivers can contribute to a safer and happier holiday celebration. Shehan delivered a powerful message to anyone considering driving under the influence.

“it’s not worth it. At the end of the day, even if you feel like you’re okay to drive, even buzzed driving is drunk driving, so do not do that,” said Shehan. “Make sure that you have a safe way to get home before you even take that first sip of your drink.”
