MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Vanderbilt beat Virginia Tech with a score of 34-27 in an overtime win after a touchdown run by quarterback Diego Pavia.

The season opener for both teams took place on Saturday, where Pavia — Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year — scored on a 4-yard touchdown run. He ended up throwing for 190 yards and rushed for 104 yards.

The Hokies attempted a change-up in overtime as they replaced Kyron Drones with Collin Schlee. Schlee made a throw to Da’Quan Felton that went out of the end zone, the catalyst for an early Commodores celebration.

In regulation, Pavia capped a 70-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Sedrick Alexander with 1:51 left on the clock and Virginia Tech in the lead at 27-20. Brock Taylor was set up by Pavia for what would have been the game-winning field goal at 43 yards, but he missed wide right.

Although Virginia Tech came into the game being favored by 13.5 points, they were eventually met with defeat.
