RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction for the Richmond Flying Squirrels’ new baseball stadium is set for Friday evening.

Richmond City leaders, Flying Squirrels and the Economic Development Authority along with many others will celebrate the event.

Officials announced their naming rights partnership with Carmax — the nation’s largest retailer for used cars — earlier this week naming the new stadium ‘Carmax Park.’

The franchise says this partnership will secure the future of baseball in the city.

It hopes to focus on delivering engagement initiatives and promotional activities to create memorable fan experiences, but also serve as a platform to support and uplift local community partners by offering the space to host events.

Officials say it’s the next step in building a history of community engagement, innovation and progress.

The ceremony will be located south of the Diamond, across from Avenue of the Champions and begin at 4:35 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6.

Gates will open at 4 p.m.
