PRINCE GEORGE, Va. (WRIC) — An embezzlement investigation is underway at an apartment complex in Prince George County after several residents said their rent checks went missing.

Brooke Lindsay and Kendra Tonic told 8News they’ve never had an issue paying their rent in the years they’ve lived in the Puddledock Place Apartments.

That’s why they were shocked when they came home in August to a letter on their door, saying they would be evicted if they didn’t pay four months worth of rent — about $4,000 — in the next five days.

“I’m already stressed and barely making it as a single parent,” said Tonic. “You know, [I’m] living from paycheck to paycheck, so it’s really, really stressful when you think about somebody affecting the stability of you and your children’s household.”

Several other residents told 8News the money they paid to the apartment complex went missing and they were never told what happened.

“Apparently, none of the money orders are accounted for,” said Lindsey. “They’re saying they can’t find them.”

According to Puddledock Place’s website , the complex offers two and three bedroom options for low-income families ranging from $800 to nearly $1,200 a month.

8News visited Puddledock Place and contacted the property management director, who said an investigation was underway and police involved, but there was no comment on what happened to the residents’ money or who is responsible.

“The management is actively addressing all resident concerns, especially regarding any payments or related issues,” said the spokesperson. “We are committed to resolving these matters effectively and ensuring the well-being of our community.”

A Prince George County Police Department spokesperson confirmed that an embezzlement investigation is underway and said that no charges have been filed at this time.
