RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – Some Richmonders celebrated Friday the 13th by adopting a new furry friend fit for the occasion.

The Richmond Animal League (RAL) and the Richmond SPCA held a black cat adoption event at the Poe Museum in Richmond, with an adoption fee of only $13 dollars.

Many came looking to get a new addition to their family, including Amber Burton and her daughter Arya, who couldn’t miss out on the deal.

“We used to have a black cat,” said Amber Burton. “We’ve really missed him since he’s passed, and we felt it was time to bring another black cat into our family.”

The museum invited RAL and SPCA to help get black cats and kittens adopted.

RAL had 10 cats total up for adoption and SPCA had 4 to start with 3 more added later in the day. The first 14 cats were adopted within 45 minutes of the event starting.

“We are just so big on opportunities that can get us out into the community,” said Lauren Behringer, RAL Special Event Manager. “This is a wonderful event to, you know, show the public what we do, what we’re about.”

Behringer explained that between superstitions and black cats being harder to photograph for online listings, they are often overlooked for adoptions.

“We really just want people to understand that they are amazing companions, and they deserve loving homes,” Behringer said.

On the next Friday the 13 th in April, the organizations are looking to possibly do another event hoping to get more black cats adopted out into the community.

Richmond Animal Care and Control is also having a 13-dollar adoption special for its animals through the weekend. You can find more details about this on their Facebook page here.
