Small plane overturns near Williamsburg Jamestown Airport

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A small plane overturned just off the runway to the Williamsburg Jamestown Airport after having difficulty landing Friday afternoon, with the pilot suffering minor injuries, James City County Police said.

The call for the incident came in at 4:20 p.m. for a report of a small plane that had difficulty landing before going off the runway and overturning, police said.

The incident happened at 100 Marclay Road, which leads into the airport.

The pilot, Robert Walden of Fayetteville, Georgia, was able to get himself out of the plane and did not suffer life-threatening injuries. He was talking to first responders and was taken to Riverside Doctors’ Hospital in Williamsburg.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the pilot of the airplane, a VANS RV Sport model, appeared to have issues while attempting to approach the runway, Virginia State Police said. The Federal Aviation Administration is at the scene, and the National Transportation Safety Board has been notified.
