POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Powhatan County recently announced its partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a book-gifting program that aims to motivate younger generations to read.

According to a press release from Powhatan County Public Schools (PCPS), Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is “an international early literacy, book-gifting program that mails an age-appropriate book, once a month, to every child from birth to age five.”

The books are free, and the ultimate goal of the program is to strengthen early literacy and encourage a love of reading that will last throughout the child’s life.

The first registration event for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon at Powhatan County Public Library, located at 2270 Mann Road, along with two story times at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.

People that attend this event will have the chance to receive children’s books from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library’s Powhatan Advisory Board and will be able to register their children under the age of 5 to have books delivered by the USPS to their mailbox.

To register your child for this opportunity, click this link. Over 100 children in Powhatan County have already signed up to start getting their free books in the mail.

Children will receive their first book in the mail — “The Little Engine That Could” — at around six to eight weeks after being enrolled, then books will arrive monthly until their fifth birthday.

This partnership and project has been made possible by a local nonprofit — the Powhatan Educational Foundation — after securing community support with the help of Bob and Karla Curtis, New Horizon Bank, QuickStart Tennis of Central Virginia and the Powhatan Lions Club. The project also had support from donations and fundraisers with businesses including TBT EL Gallo, Jiji’s Frozen Custard and Kona Ice.
