RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) will be opening a training program for entry-level pharmacy technicians in an effort to address recent staffing shortages in the region.

According to a release by Mary Kate Brogan, the “Pharmacy Technician Training Program” is a part-time program that people with a high school diploma can complete in six to nine months. It utilizes self-paced online learning, hands-on training, virtual simulations and experiential rotations to educate interested learners, according to the program director Barbara Exum.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic the roles of pharmacists have been changing, and the responsibility increase has created a higher demand for pharmacy technicians in communities, according to VCU.

The role of a pharmacy technician is described by the university as a person that often works in pharmacies and hospitals to help pharmacists dispense prescription medication to patients or health professionals.

The program has already enrolled participants in its pilot phase, but is now open to any interested applicants. It holds 10 learners per class and there will be start dates offered in the fall, winter and late spring.

Applications for this admissions cycle are due on Friday, Sept. 20, and the program begins on Sept. 30. For more information about the program and admissions, visit the program website.
