SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Two Spotsylvania County parents will head to trial in the spring of 2025 after their 2-year-old son died in a Richmond hospital with a “significant amount” of cocaine in his system.

Cinceir Croxton, Jr., or “CJ,” was two years old when he died at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) pediatric hospital in Dec. 2023. He was flown there from a Spotsylvania motel after he was exposed to a “significant amount” of cocaine, according to authorities.

CJ’s parents — 24-year-old Cinceir Croxton, Sr. and 22-year-old Kayleighya Coleman — were not at the hospital when he died. While they did go up to the hospital initially, they reportedly left and returned to the hotel prior to CJ’s death.

Initially, Croxton and Coleman were charged with child neglect, child endangerment and cruelty. Since then, in August, a grand jury in Spotsylvania County decided that the two would be charged with CJ’s murder.

8News legal analyst Russ Stone previously spoke on what may have prompted the grand jury to seek murder charges.

“The two adults charged engaged in some activity — whether it was allowing the child to be close enough to cocaine where the child may have gotten into it, or maybe even directly gave it to them,” Stone said in August.

Croxton and Coleman’s jury trials will begin on April 23, 2025.
