RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Hurricane Helene has intensified into a Category 2 Hurricane as of around 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, and is projected to make landfall in Florida later that day.

In response to the impending storm, Governor Glenn Youngkin has declared a state of emergency for the Commonwealth of Virginia, cautioning residents that they may experience some effects from Helene.

Heavy rainfall is expected to begin on Thursday, particularly in the western part of Florida, raising concerns about potential flooding, tornadoes and strong winds. The governor’s declaration allows both state and local resources to be mobilized in preparation for the storm’s potential impact in Virginia.

The hurricane is already unfolding in Mexico and Cancún, where residents are grappling with strong winds and heavy rain brought by Hurricane Helene. Forecasts from the National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center prompted the state of emergency, highlighting the seriousness of the weather conditions ahead.

Authorities urge Virginians to exercise caution when driving on roads from Thursday, Sept. 26 through Friday, Sept. 27 as rapidly changing weather may create hazardous driving conditions.
