    Chesterfield Fire and EMS crews rescue person following flooding in Virginia, return home

    CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Six members of Chesterfield Fire and EMS, who are part of the Virginia Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team (VAHART), have returned home after being deployed to the western part of Virginia after severe storms moved through the state .

    According to Facebook post by Chesterfield Fire and EMS , three members of the VAHART team returned on the night of Saturday, Sept. 28, and three other members arrived back at the Chesterfield County Airport in the morning of Sunday, Sept. 29.

    The teams were deployed to Western Virginia on Thursday, Sept. 26 where they remained on standby in preparation for Hurricane Helene .

    Chesterfield Fire and EMS said after the team was deployed to Roanoke, the team was repositioned to Washington County on Saturday conducting flyovers and assessing flood damage in Damascus.

    According to Chesterfield Fire and EMS, the team was able to rescue a person using a helicopter hoist.

    The team has been deployed two other times, in 2017 and 2018, but Chesterfield Fire and EMS said this was the team’s first deployment where they performed a rescue like this.

    Additionally, 19 members of Chesterfield Fire and EMS were deployed as part of the Virginia Task Force 8, and assisted in seven evacuations and four rescues that resulted from flooding, which brought 10 adults, a child, five dogs and a cat to safety .
