    Central Virginia, tidewater shelters team up to help animals displaced after Radford Animal Shelter flooded

    POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A team of local shelters, including Powhatan Animal Control, drove to Radford Animal Shelter in western Virginia to help animals displaced due to flooding from a recent storm.

    According to Powhatan Animal Control , a team from Powhatan and Suffolk counties assembled on Thursday, Oct. 3 to drive to Radford Animal Shelter and bring the remaining animals into their care after the Radford shelter was devastated by flooding during Helene.

    “Thankfully the shelter evacuated with the help of their citizens, who are fostering animals until help could arrive,” Powhatan Animal Control said in its Facebook post.

    Alongside Powhatan Animal Control, local shelters in Lunenburg, New Kent, Suffolk, Dinwiddie and Isle of Wight counties, alongside Powhatan, have also agreed to take in these animals so that Radford Animal Shelter can focus on reopening.

    In a Facebook post , Radford Animal Shelter said the animals picked up by the Powhatan and Suffolk team included eight rabbits.

    “Please keep this Virginia town in your thoughts and prayers,” Powhatan Animal Control said in its statement. “Teamwork makes it happen!”
