RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – You have a chance to learn about Richmond’s green spaces during the return of Richmond Tree Week, formerly known as ArborDayRVA.

From Friday, Oct. 11 to Sunday, Oct. 20, tree lovers can find 40 free events across the city of Richmond that celebrate the city’s urban forestry.

More than 20 community organizations are partnering for this year’s scheduled events that include tree giveaways, workshops, happy hours, a festival, and much more.

“It’s a collaborative effort to shine a light on those nonprofits, local government efforts and community groups that are doing work to enhance our greenspaces and promote our urban canopy,” Matt Szucs, volunteer coordinator with Reforest Richmond, told 8News.

The week is part of Reforest Richmond’s mission to increase the city’s tree canopy.

“The mission of Reforest Richmond is to increase the tree canopy to 60% by 2037, which is a goal that was outlined by Richmond 300 – the master plan for the city,” Szucs explained. “We are trying to pursue that through targeted approaches, and events through our partners – especially in areas that are underserved and that have been underinvested.”

Some of this year’s events require pre-registration, and the full list can be found on the Reforest Richmond website.
