    Shots fired at VSU, university was on lockdown

    CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Shots were fired in the parking lot of a Virginia State University (VSU) residence hall Monday night, causing the university to go into lockdown.

    According to VSU Police, shots were fired in the parking lot of Moore Hall at about 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14. A spokesperson for VSU told 8News that someone reported that they heard gunfire.

    The university went into lockdown following this report, beginning around 7:19 p.m., per VSU Police’s initial alert .

    The spokesperson told 8News that locking the university down is standard when gunfire is reported, as a precaution.

    As of 8:31 p.m., the lockdown was lifted and police cleared the area.

    A spokesperson for the Chesterfield County Police Department — which is working with VSU Police to investigate this incident — told 8News that police found shell casings in the involved parking lot.

    No victim nor suspect has been found as of the time of reporting, but the investigation continues. If you have any information that could aid investigators, you are asked to contact VSU Police at 804-524-5411.
