RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — This Friday night, the undefeated Huguenot Falcons (6-0) will take to the road to take on the LC Bird Skyhawks, one of Class 5’s top teams. The matchup promises to be an explosive display of two of the state’s most potent offenses, making it our 8 Sports Blitz Game of the Week.

LC Bird head coach Matt Bland expressed his enthusiasm for the challenge ahead, noting the impressive talent on Huguenot’s roster. “I’m excited about the opportunity. Huguenot is an incredible team. They look like a college team, got a bunch of Power 4 guys on the team. Well coached, I was really impressed with their skill kids but also their offensive line. Whoever is coaching the line out there is doing a great job, so it’s an exciting opportunity for us just getting the opportunity to play them.”

Huguenot has been nothing short of dominant this season, averaging an astonishing 55 points per game while allowing just 10.6. However, the Skyhawks have also been successful, averaging 41.5 points per game. Coach Charles Scott is well aware that the Falcons will present a formidable challenge. “They have playmakers that can change the game at any time, and we just got to play our game, play fast and get to the ball. Their defensive line is outstanding; they play hard. They are a well-coached team, they play fast, they will be well prepared.”

The Skyhawks have started the season with a 5-1 record, their only loss occurring in Week 2 during a tough contest against Thomas Dale. Coach Bland views that setback as a pivotal moment for the team. “We had to reset our focus. I go back to the drawing board, so to speak, and continue to work harder. I think it humbled some of us, and you always play and coach better after a loss.”

For the Huguenot Falcons, this season represents a remarkable turnaround from just two years ago, when they finished with a 1-9 record. Now, with an undefeated streak, their confidence is at an all-time high. “We did expect to be undefeated. We knew that we had an outstanding offseason, and with the guys returning, we had experienced guys. We knew how we wanted to coach them. So we expected to be undefeated, and we are, so we are very excited about the possibilities,” Coach Scott stated.

As both teams prepare to square off at 7:00 PM this Friday, anticipation is building for what promises to be a highly competitive and entertaining game.
