PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Over twenty dogs were seized from a Meherrin-area home in Prince Edward County following reported concerns for their welfare.

Prince Edward County Animal Care and Control, alongside the county’s sheriff’s department, executed a search warrant at a home on Mountain Creek Road on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

This warrant was obtained after concerns about the welfare of the animals — which the owner was allegedly breeding and selling, according to authorities — were brought to the attention of the authorities.

In total, animal control officers seized 23 dogs.

“We are asking for the public’s understanding while the department manages the veterinary care and placement of these animals,” Prince Edward County Animal Care and Control said.

Authorities did not provide any further information on the condition of the dogs now in the county’s care.

The Prince Edward County Animal Shelter is at maximum capacity with the addition of these dogs. According to authorities, strays and owner surrenders will be on “an emergency-only basis” until further notice.

No additional information is available at this time. 8News has reached out to Prince Edward County Animal Care and Control to learn more about this situation.
