Senior Community Services offers home repairs, tech support

Senior Community Services, the same nonprofit agency I have worked for more than 32 years, provides the HOME Program at our center. The HOME Program can assist people ages 60-plus with repairing faucets, toilets, outlets, fixtures and more. The program also can help with minor carpentry projects, housekeeping and snow removal. Costs for these services are based on income and ability to pay. Call 763-416-7969 to apply or for more information. This fantastic program truly enables people to remain in their own homes and our center is lucky to be able to offer it.

Senior Community Services also provides tech support services at our center. If you are having issues with your laptop, cell phone, tablet or other technology equipment and are at least 60 years old, I encourage you to make an appointment with our TECH Services program. This is a free service that is offered every Tuesday. You can get help with adjusting settings for basic use, communication, online safety and security; personalizing your device for your needs and interests; find and use functions, services, and apps that will be most helpful to you. This service is provided as part of the HOME program and funded, in part, by Hennepin and Wright Counties and the Minnesota Department of Human Services. Call the center at 763-295-2000 to schedule your appointment.

You can also give us a call if you wish to attend a very interesting presentation we have coming up. Historian David Jones will present, “Prohibition: A Grand Misadventure” on Wednesday, July 17 at 10 a.m. In 1920, the United States entered a period during which the manufacture, sale, and transportation of intoxicating liquors was banned. As it turned out, the U.S. also entered a period of lawlessness and corruption. Rather than curing the ills of society, Prohibition is remembered for creating some of the worst possible results.

You are also asked to sign up in advance if you plan to come to the next “Ask a Master Gardener” event that will take place on Friday, July 19 at 12:30 p.m. A Master Gardener from the University of Minnesota Extension Volunteer program will be available to provide tips and resources to answer your gardening questions. This month we will discuss why pollinator gardens are so important.

If you are a caregiver, it is important to get the support you need and one way to do that is by attending the monthly Memory Café get-togethers. The Memory Café is a safe and comfortable place where caregivers and their loved ones with memory loss can participate together. The café experience is free, and all supplies are provided for you. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 17 at our center from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Caregivers have the option to attend a concurrent caregiver support group. Please sign up if you plan to attend.

You can also call the center to sign up for the next casino trip. We will be sharing a coach bus to Treasure Island Casino on Monday, Aug. 5 with participants from the Crow River Senior Center. The bus will depart the Monticello Community Center at 8 a.m. and return at approximately 4:15 p.m. Cost is $25 and those going will receive $15 on their casino card and $5 off food.

Ron Larson was the winner of last week’s cribbage tournament. Deb Ende came in second place, and Bernice Nathe third. The last euchre tournament winner was Glen Muckenhirn. There was a three-way tie for second place between Loren Heckmann, Jim Stewart and Harley Thompson.

I hope you are able to take in some of the awesome Riverfest events. It is such a wonderful community celebration.
