SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Today is the day we remember and reflect on Americans who defended our flag and kept our country free.

To pay their respects, hundreds gathered in areas across the country and the Coastal Empire to honor our fallen soldiers on Memorial Day. One of the solemn ceremonies was held this morning at Laurel Grove South Cemetery in Savannah.

During the era of slavery, there were more freedmen interred in Laurel Grove than any other site in the Southeast. The cemetery continues to serve as a culturally significant burial ground for African Americans.

“We have so many families out here we do not want them to forget their loved ones,” says US Army Staff Sergeant Sabrina Scales, “We bring the community together to keep those memories alive.”

Laurel Grove Cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
