COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WSAV) – Colleton County Sherriff’s Office, Colleton Fire-Safety and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources are advising against recreational boating in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Debby.

Particularly, in the Edisto River, boaters are discouraged from operating in a manner that generates “Wakes” (waves generated by a boat as it navigates through water”.

With the waters having already risen over 15 feet, wakes risk spreading water into residencies and electrical sources, creating a danger for the surrounding environment and citizens who live along the river.

The County is also encouraging firm security or removal, if necessary, of valuables and objects deemed floating hazards by those living along the Edisto. It will take several days before the water levels in the river to fully recede to pre-Debby levels.
