SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Savannah Smiles Dueling Pianos, a premier entertainment venue will host an Active Shooter Response Training class with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO).

“I have spent my entire life in the service industry and have watched the country scramble to make sense of active shooting situations. With so many restaurant, bars and hotel colleagues put in vulnerable positions, I wanted to bring in an expert to teach us possible preventative actions. Being prepared in case something happens is a smart move for all of us,” says Savannah Smiles General Manager Tripp Morales . “We want everyone to come out for this free informational training class.”

“Developed by ALERRT in 2004, this presentation provides strategies, guidance and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event. With over 48 active shooter incidents in 2023, we will discuss civilian response options, medical issues and drills that will help people be more prepared for unexpected events,” states Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Professional Standards Division Captain Gary Murphy .

Captain Murphy, who is a 29-year veteran with CCSO, added, “Even though there was a decrease in active shooter incidents by 4% from 2022, the number of active shooter incidents increased 60% since 2019. People behave differently during stress, your body reacts differently under stress and easy tasks can be difficult – this training will give you vital information that may save your life.”

The event will be on Tuesday, August 20, at 6 p.m. The venue is at 314 Williamson Street, Savannah GA 31401.

NOTE- This class is open to the public and is free of charge.
